The High Court has issued an order to form a committee comprising of experts to investigate the deadly at a commercial building in Dhaka’s Bailey Road fire which claimed 46 lives and injured several others.
The HC bench of Justices Naima Haider and Kazi Zinat Haque issued the order during a hearing on Monday (4 March).
HC ordered the home secretary to lead the committee to be comprised of the inspector general of police, experts from Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and Dhaka City Corporations.
The directives were issued in response to two separate writ petitions filed by Supreme Court lawyers Md Eunus Ali Akond and Ishrat Jahan on 3 March, seeking necessary directives to form an expert committee to probe the tragic incident.
The committee has been tasked to submit a report within four months outlining steps taken against vulnerable buildings in the city.
Furthermore, the HC has ordered Rajuk to install signboards on vulnerable buildings in Dhaka to enable people to be aware of the risks before entering them.
On 29 February, a devastating fire started from the ground floor of a commercial building named, “Green Cosy Cottage” in the capital’s Bailey Road.
A total of 46 people have been killed in the fire and a dozen are in hospital in critical condiiton.
