The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday (11 October) formally protested to the Government of Myanmar regarding the killing of a Bangladeshi fisherman, Usman, aged 60, from Kona Para, Shah Pori Island, Teknaf Upazila, Cox’s Bazar, by the Myanmar Navy on 9 October 2024.

In a diplomatic note addressed to the Myanmar Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh expressed its deep concern over this grievous incident, which was exacerbated by the abduction of approximately fifty-eight (58) Bangladeshi fishermen, along with six (6) fishing boats, including that of Usman.

The fishermen had been fishing near St. Martin’s Union in Teknaf Upazila, within Bangladesh’s territorial waters, when they were apprehended.

Following communication between the Bangladesh Coast Guard and the Myanmar Navy, the fishermen and their vessels were released in two phases, with the final group being freed yesterday.

The Government of Bangladesh urged Myanmar to take swift and decisive action to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

Furthermore, Myanmar has been reminded of the necessity to fully respect Bangladesh’s territorial sovereignty and refrain from any further provocations that could undermine bilateral relations.
