A Media Reform Commission will be announced after consultations with all stakeholders, based on their advice, said Information Adviser Nahid Islam. He also mentioned efforts to professionalise journalism.

Highlighting the need to treat journalists with respect, Adviser Nahid Islam stated that editors and owners are the main opponents of the wage board. He pointed out that many organisations still do not pay salaries properly, and without fair wages, professionalism in journalism cannot be achieved. Ensuring compliance with the wage board and addressing salary issues is essential, he added.

Speaking at a roundtable discussion on media reform at the National Press Club on Monday (7 October), Nahid Islam noted the role of the media during the recent student-public protests.

Referring to the "shutdown" of media coverage during the protests, he remarked, "Electronic media did not broadcast any information on the shutdown. We know why that was the case."

He also stressed the need for transparency in the circulation figures published by the Department of Films and Publications (DFP).

The information adviser emphasised the importance of looking forward and exploring ways to professionalise journalism.

He mentioned that young people are increasingly worried about this profession. He further noted that professionalism is crucial for a free press.

Others present at the discussion included Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the chief adviser, Faruq Waisif, director general of PIB, along with several journalists.
