The flood situation in Sherpur has deteriorated over the past few days due to continuous heavy rainfall and torrents descending from the hills in India.

The water levels of various rivers, including the Maharshi in Jhenaigati and the Bhogai and Chellakhali rivers in Nalitabari, have risen, inundating low-lying areas across the district.

More than 100 villages have been submerged, leaving hundreds of families stranded by floodwaters.

The floods began early on Friday (4 October) following a sudden surge in water levels. So far, reports indicate that 7 people have lost their lives, and many others are still missing.

The army, local administration, and several volunteer organisations have been conducting rescue operations to locate and assist those affected.

On Sunday morning (6 October), intermittent rainfall across the district further worsened the suffering of those affected by the floods, with new areas being flooded.

Jhenaigati Bazaar and several establishments have been submerged by floodwaters. Since the morning, six additional unions in Sherpur Sadar and Nakla upazilas have been flooded. Waterlogging has also been reported in various parts of the town, affecting schools, mosques, madrasas, homes, and business establishments.

According to the Water Development Board, the water level of the Bhogai River in Nalitabari is currently flowing 51 centimetres above the danger level, while the Chellakhali River is flowing 185 centimetres above the danger level.

Nakla Police Station OC Habibur Rahman confirmed that one person had died in Nakla on Saturday night. In addition, five people have died in Nalitabari upazila and one in Jhenaigati due to the floods.
