Preparations are underway for the release of this year's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examination results, with the announcement expected as early as October.

According to sources from the Ministry of Education and the examination boards on Wednesday (11 September), the results will be published through the subject mapping process.

"During the COVID-19 period, exams were cancelled, and results were published using the subject mapping process based on previous examinations. This year, we are following the same method, and the proposal has been sent to the Ministry. Once a decision is made, the results will be published promptly," said Professor Tapan Kumar Sarkar, coordinator of the Inter-Education Board and Chairman of the Dhaka Education Board.

This process, used during the COVID-19 pandemic, calculates a student’s score based on the average of their previous examination results.

For the subjects in which exams were held, the answer scripts have been evaluated, while the remaining subjects will be assessed using the subject mapping method.

A proposal outlining this process has already been submitted to the Ministry of Education, and the results will be released upon approval.

Sources also indicated that for subjects where exams were not conducted, students' marks will be calculated based on their Junior School Certificate (JSC) and Secondary School Certificate (SSC) results.

Specifically, 25% of the JSC marks and 75% of the SSC marks in the relevant subject will be used to determine the student's score.

For instance, if a student obtained 100 marks in Mathematics at the JSC level, 25 of those marks will be taken, and if they scored 100 at the SSC level, 75 marks will be taken, resulting in a total score of 100 for Mathematics in the HSC.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the HSC exams were cancelled in 2020, and all students were passed based on their SSC and JSC results. A similar subject mapping process was used to publish the results in the following year, with only a few subjects being examined.

This year's HSC examinations commenced on 30 June and were conducted smoothly until 16 July.

However, due to the quota reform movement, the exams scheduled for 18, 21, 23, and 25 July were postponed.

In the wake of the anti-discrimination student-led uprising, which resulted in the ousting of the Sheikh Hasina government on 5 August, the dates of the remaining exams were rescheduled several times, with the final date set for 11 August.

In the meantime, students began protests demanding the cancellation of the postponed exams, staging demonstrations at the Ministry of Education on 20 August. Subsequently, these exams were officially cancelled.

A total of 14,50,790 students from nine general education boards, technical boards, and the madrasa board participated in this year’s HSC examination.
