The results of the HSC and equivalent examinations will be published on 15 October

"Due to the cancellation of several exams, the results this year will be based on the SSC or equivalent examination scores through subject mapping, for subjects where exams were conducted, the answer scripts have been evaluated, and results will be declared accordingly," said Tapan Kumar Sarkar, chairman of the Dhaka Education Board and president of the Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee on Monday (7 October).

"For subjects where exams were not held, the results will be calculated using the subject mapping method, based on SSC or equivalent exam results," he added.

There is a set policy for subject mapping. In this process, if a student had a corresponding subject in both SSC and HSC, their SSC score will be taken into full consideration for that subject in HSC.

In cases where subjects differ between the two levels, the subject mapping policy will determine how the marks are transferred to ensure fair results.

The cancellation of the remaining HSC exams occurred after students staged protests and a sit-in at the secretariat in August, demanding that the suspended exams be cancelled altogether.

This year’s HSC exams commenced on 30 June, with around 14.5 lakh candidates.

After seven exams were held, a nationwide protest erupted demanding reforms in the quota system for government jobs. This led to the suspension of exams in phases, leaving six subjects and practical exams pending.

The quota reform movement later escalated into a single demand for the government to step down, culminating in the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government on 5 August. Following this, it was decided that the remaining exams would resume from 11 August, though this did not materialise.

According to education board sources, one reason for the delay was the damage to exam paper trunks during attacks on police stations in various regions on the day the Awami League government was ousted.

As a result, a new exam schedule was announced, with exams set to resume from 11 September.

However, many students protested, arguing that the indefinite postponement of exams had caused them considerable mental distress, and they called for the cancellation of the remaining exams.

Eventually, the authorities conceded to the protests and cancelled the remaining exams.
