Bangladesh witnessed a remarkable inflow of remittances last December, reaching $2.64 billion, the highest monthly total in five years.
According to the latest report by Bangladesh Bank, released on Wednesday (1 January), this inflow equates to Tk31,668 crore, based on an exchange rate of Tk120 per dollar.
The daily average remittance stood at $8.51 million.
The central bank's report highlighted that the December inflow surpasses the $1.99 billion recorded during the same month last year.
The previous record for the highest remittance in five years was set in July 2020, when expatriates sent $2.59 billion.
In June 2023, remittances amounted to $2.53 billion.
However, a decline followed in July, the first month of the current fiscal year, with inflows dropping to $1.91 billion, marking the lowest figure in ten months.
The trend began to reverse after the formation of an interim government, which helped stabilise the situation.
In August, remittances reached $2.22 billion, followed by $2.40 billion in September, $2.39 billion in October, and $2.19 billion in November.
This steady growth culminated in December's record-breaking figure, providing a significant boost to the country's economy and offering optimism for sustained inflows in the coming months.
