In a bid to simplify tax submissions, the interim government has introduced an online income tax filing system, enabling citizens to file taxes from the comfort of their homes rather than visiting a bank or tax office.

“Your tax contributions are the lifeblood of our economy. To ease the process, we have implemented a system allowing income tax returns to be filed from home,” Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus said while making the announcement via a video message on Monday (28 October).

He emphasised the vital role taxpayers play in driving the country's economy.

Under this new system, all employees and officers in Dhaka, Narayanganj, and Gazipur, along with all scheduled banks, mobile phone operators, and select multinational companies, are now required to submit income taxes online.

Additionally, citizens across the rest of the country are being encouraged to adopt online tax filing.

In a bid to increase participation, Dr Yunus announced that individuals and organisations with the highest online tax submissions will be eligible for state rewards.

He further called for tax-filing competitions to be organised at the district level.

To facilitate this transition, Dr Yunus also urged the nation’s youth to assist taxpayers with the online filing process, contributing to a smoother digital tax experience.
