BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday warned of a conspiracy to deprive people of their right to vote and stated that the party will return to the streets if necessary to protect both party and public interests.

“We are not protesting at the moment. Instead, we are reaching out to people with iftar items and Eid gifts, standing by them in times of joy and sorrow. However, if any obstacles arise against the interests of the BNP and the people, we will take to the streets once again,” he said while distributing Eid gifts among the underprivileged in Beraid, Badda.

The event, organised by the Dhaka North City unit of BNP, was held on behalf of the party’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Fakhrul urged citizens to prepare for a movement, alleging that a domestic and international plot is underway to suppress voting rights and delay elections. “We will not let this happen,” he declared.

He also noted that BNP leaders and activists have faced severe repression over the past 15 years while fighting for the restoration of fair elections and democratic rights.

The BNP leader claimed that the country was freed from Sheikh Hasina’s "autocratic and fascist" rule on August 6, following 36 days of protests led by political parties and students.

He further stated that the interim government under Professor Muhammad Yunus was formed to ensure a free and fair national election within a short period.

“But whenever we talk about elections, many say BNP only focuses on this issue. That is natural because our entire struggle has been centered on ensuring free and fair elections,” Fakhrul added.
