In the wake of a powerful earthquake that has caused widespread devastation in Myanmar, the Fire Service and Civil Defence has issued a warning for potential tremors in Bangladesh. Authorities have urged the public and relevant stakeholders to take immediate precautionary measures to minimize risks and ensure preparedness.

In a press release, the Fire service emphasised the importance of constructing earthquake-resistant buildings in compliance with the Bangladesh National Building Code (2020). It also called for the renovation and reinforcement of older and structurally vulnerable buildings to prevent collapses in the event of a quake. Strengthening fire prevention systems in high-rise and commercial buildings has been highlighted as a crucial safety measure.

Ensuring the security of utility services, including gas, water, and electricity lines, is another key recommendation. Authorities have stressed the need for regular earthquake drills and awareness campaigns at both individual and institutional levels to enhance preparedness. Displaying emergency contact numbers for fire services, ambulances, police, and hospitals in public and private buildings has also been advised to facilitate quick responses during emergencies.

Additionally, the Fire Service has encouraged training volunteers to assist in disaster response efforts. Households are advised to keep essential emergency supplies such as flashlights, radios with spare batteries, whistles, hammers, helmets, non-perishable food, clean water, necessary medicines, first aid kits, and childcare supplies readily available. Cooperating with disaster monitoring agencies and supporting preparedness activities have also been underscored as vital steps in mitigating potential earthquake risks.
