A Kushtia court on Sunday sentenced nine individuals to life imprisonment for the 2017 murder of Awami League leader and former UP chairman Lutfur Rahman Sabu.

Kushtia District and Session Judge Sumaiya Khanam delivered the verdict, also imposing a fine of Tk20,000 on each convict. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment.

The convicts include former Ambaria Union chairman Mashiur Rahman Milon, Jashim Uddin, Ekhlas Ali, Murad Ali, Mahabul Hossain, Rashedul Ali, Wasim Ali, Rafiqul Islam, and Helal Uddin—residents of Mirpur upazila.

According to the case details, on 11 January 2017, the assailants intercepted Lutfur Rahman Sabu’s motorbike while he was traveling to Chuadanga’s Alamdanga. Due to a rivalry over local supremacy, they fatally stabbed him on the spot.

Following the incident, Sabu’s younger brother, Habibur Rahman Habib, filed a case with Mirpur Police Station. Law enforcement later submitted a charge sheet against ten individuals.

After reviewing evidence and witness testimonies, the court sentenced nine of the accused to life in prison, while one was acquitted due to lack of sufficient evidence.
