Information and Broadcasting Advise Nahid Islam has stated that there is no scope for political activities under the name or ideology of the Awami League. He made these remarks during a recent interview with a media outlet.
Nahid Islam said, “Their ideology is fascist, and for the past 15 years, politics has been conducted based on that ideology, leading to genocide. Those who recognise their mistakes must abandon that ideology. There is no issue with their political and civil rights—they can join other parties or establish a new one.”
Addressing the Awami League’s recent announcements of programmes online, he remarked, “What kind of programme can a party without a visible position organise? Their actions are mainly intended to create panic. Public safety is a concern here. The Chhatra League is a banned organisation, and its members are attempting covert attacks and spreading rumours. Many of them are facing criminal charges, and the police are working to arrest them.”
Speaking about India’s role, Nahid Islam alleged that the country has provided refuge to several individuals accused of genocide, including Sheikh Hasina. He claimed that these individuals are attempting to create instability in Bangladesh through online messages and other means from Indian soil.
“If the Indian government were not complicit, they would not be able to operate in this way. We expect responsible behaviour from India on this matter,” he added.
On the question of whether the Awami League would be banned, Nahid Islam stated, “A national consensus is needed on whether the Awami League should be banned or whether it should be allowed to participate in elections. Future actions from the courts, the Election Commission and other political parties will determine this. However, those of us who have led the coup believe that the Awami League has neither the moral nor the legal legitimacy to continue its political activities.”
