The price of a 12kg cylinder of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) will remain steady at Tk1,455 in January, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) confirmed.

Similarly, the price of autogas will stay unchanged at Tk66.78 per litre.

Although international market prices for propane and butane have decreased, the rise in the dollar exchange rate has offset any potential reduction in local market prices.

Compared to last month, the average price per tonne of propane and butane dropped by $13.33.

Based on this, a price reduction was anticipated. For January, the price per kilogram of LPG has been set at Tk121.19.

On Thursday (2 December), BERC Chairman Jalal Ahmed announced the new pricing structure at a press conference held in the commission's hall room.

Attendees included members Syeda Sultana Razia, Mizanur Rahman, Abdur Razzak, and the commission's Secretary Barrister Khalilur Rahman.

Since LPG is an import-dependent commodity, the base price has been linked to fluctuations in Saudi contract prices since 12 April 2021, when the initial price structure was declared.

Although BERC revises LPG prices monthly, complaints persist that the regulated rates are rarely followed in the market.

Addressing the concerns, the Chairman stated, "We notify divisional commissioners, district commissioners, and the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, urging them to strengthen market monitoring. Efforts to enhance monitoring will be further intensified."

The announcement reaffirms BERC's commitment to aligning local LPG pricing with global market dynamics while ensuring compliance through stricter oversight.
