A firefighter tragically lost his life after being struck by a truck while responding to a fire at the secretariat early on Thursday (26 December).
The deceased, identified as Sohanur Zaman Nayan, was part of a special firefighting team from the Tejgaon Fire Station.
Another firefighter, Habibur Rahman, suffered a leg injury while working to extinguish the blaze.
Details of the incident were disclosed at a press conference this morning by Fire Service and Civil Defence Director General Brigadier General Muhammad Zahed Kamal.
He said Nayan was crossing the road to connect a water pipe to a pump when a speeding truck struck him from behind.
Nayan was immediately rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The incident has cast a pall over the firefighting community, which continues to grapple with the risks and sacrifices inherent in their service.
