Prime Asia University students blocked the road in Banani's Kakoli area on Sunday (22 December) afternoon, demanding the recovery of funds allegedly misappropriated by members of the university's Board of Trustees and immediate steps to establish their promised permanent campus.
The demonstration disrupted vehicular movement in the area, leading to significant traffic congestion.
Officer-in-Charge of Banani Police Station, Rasel Sarwar, acknowledged the protests, stating, "The students protested yesterday as well, blocking roads in Banani. Today, they resumed their demonstrations, demanding action for a permanent campus and raising allegations against certain trustees for embezzling funds. They are seeking the recovery of these amounts."
The protesting students voiced their grievances, stating, "For a long time, we have been promised relocation to a permanent campus, but that commitment remains unfulfilled. Two departments were supposed to shift by December, yet the Board of Trustees is reportedly attempting to sell the land at the proposed permanent campus site in Purbachal's 300 Feet area."
They further alleged, "Each month, the trustees allocate Tk65,000 as car expenses—money that comes from our tuition fees. Over the years, our seniors fought for a permanent campus, but they too were denied. Moreover, some Board members have embezzled university funds, and we demand these funds be recovered."
The impasse caused by the protest has not only highlighted the students’ frustrations but also raised questions about governance and accountability within the university's administration.
