A court has granted police a two-day remand to interrogate three suspects in connection with the death of Mohtassim Masud, a Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student who was fatally struck by a car in Rupganj.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Kazi Nur Mohsino of Narayanganj court gave the order today (22 December) after a hearing, during which police had requested a five-day remand while the lawyer of the accused appealed for bail.

The accused—Mubin Al Mamun (20), Mirajul Karim (22), and Asif Chowdhury (19)—were present during the hearing.

Masud was killed early Friday while standing at a Rupganj police checkpost on the 300-Feet Road in Purbachal. Two of his classmates, Mehedi Hasan Khan and Amit Saha, sustained severe injuries in the incident.

Mubin Al Mamun, the son of retired Brigadier General Abdullah Al Mamun, was reportedly driving the car at the time of the crash. Following the incident, Mubin and his friends, Mirajul and Asif, were arrested. Subsequent drug tests revealed that both Mubin and Mirajul had tested positive for narcotics.

On Saturday, Assistant Sub-Inspector Mehedy Hasan of Rupganj Police Station filed a case under the Narcotics Control Act after police discovered an empty bottle of foreign liquor and a can of beer in the car.

Masud Mia, the father of the deceased, filed another case under the Road Transport Act on Friday morning.

Protests erupted following the incident, with BUET students demanding exemplary punishment for those responsible. They have organized sit-ins and marches to press for justice.
