The Detective Branch (DB) of Rangamati police has arrested one person with foreign-brand cigarettes worth an estimated Tk 2 crore on Friday (20 December).
Rangamati DB Police Officer-in-Charge Dows Mohammad said the contraband cigarettes were smuggled from India and were en route to Chattogram when intercepted.
Acting on intelligence, officers stopped a truck loaded with gas cylinders in the Vedvedi area of Rangamati. A search revealed 160 cartons of cigarettes concealed beneath the cylinders. One individual, identified as Jewel, was detained at the scene.
"The cigarettes were being smuggled in an elaborate manner, using gas cylinders to hide the consignment," said the Officer-in-Charge.
Legal proceedings are ongoing, he added.
