The newly appointed Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali, refrained from making any immediate decision regarding the operation of battery-powered rickshaws in the capital, citing the need to await a High Court ruling.
"I cannot comment on the operation of auto-rickshaws at this moment," said the Commissioner.
"The matter rests with the High Court, and a verdict is expected this afternoon in the Chamber Court. Until the decision is pronounced, I cannot provide any further comments. Please wait until the afternoon, after which we will sit for further discussions," he added.
Commissioner Sajjat Ali made these remarks on Monday (25 November), during a meeting held at the DMP headquarters with drivers and union leaders of auto-rickshaws, auto-vans, and easy bikes.
Addressing the union representatives, the Commissioner urged them to form a liaison committee.
"Through this committee, we can engage in discussions and reach decisions before convening again," he proposed.
In the meeting, the drivers and union leaders raised concerns about extortion, card-related corruption, and harassment, calling for an immediate end to these practices.
In response, the DMP Commissioner assured the attendees that detailed decisions on their grievances would be taken following the High Court’s ruling later in the day.
