A Dhaka court today sent former Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Atiqul Islam to jail in connection with the murder of Bokul Miah during a student-led mass uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan issued the order after police produced Atiqul before the court, concluding his five-day remand and requesting his detention in the case.

Earlier, on 13 November, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Farzana Shakila Sumu Chowdhury had placed Atiqul Islam on remand for five days. Police had arrested him on October 16 from the capital’s Mohakhali DOHS area. The following day, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ali Haider sent Atiqul to jail, showing him as an arrestee in three separate murder cases.

According to case documents, Bokul Miah joined an anti-discrimination movement on July 18 in the Uttara East area. He sustained a gunshot wound to the head and died the following day. Bokul’s widow, Monika Akter, subsequently filed the murder case with Uttara East Police Station.
