Former shipping minister and Awami League Presidium Member Shahjahan Khan has been sent to jail following a two-day remand, which was shortened from the initially approved seven days due to his health condition.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate on Sunday passed the order, while Shahjahan Khan’s lawyer, Shree Prannath, submitted a bail plea on his behalf.
On 8 September, the court had granted a seven-day remand for Shahjahan Khan in connection with the murder of 14-year-old Mutaleb during a student movement. Mutaleb was killed on 4 August in the Dhanmondi area during the protests.
Shahjahan Khan, who also serves as the Executive President of the Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation, was arrested by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in Dhanmondi on 5 September.
Khan, the elected representative of the Madaripur-2 constituency, first entered Parliament as an independent candidate in 1986. He has been re-elected from the same constituency in subsequent elections in 1991, 1996, 2001, 2008, 2014, 2018, and 2024 as a candidate of the Awami League.
