The lifeless body of six-year-old Muntaha Akhter Jerin was recovered from a canal near her home in Kanaighat, Sylhet, seven days after she went missing.
Police have detained three individuals in connection with the incident.
The tragic discovery occurred at approximately 4am on Sunday (10 November), when Muntaha's body was retrieved from the canal, with a rope tied around her neck.
Confirming the incident, Kanaighat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Awal stated that locals apprehended a woman, along with three others, who were allegedly attempting to move the child's body from the canal, possibly to dispose of it elsewhere.
"The residents, whom we had requested to remain vigilant, intercepted them while they were trying to remove the body," the OC explained.
Muntaha was the daughter of Shamim Ahmed, a resident of Bir Dal village in Vadrarifoud, under the Kanaighat Sadar Union.
Shamim Ahmed recounted that on Sunday, 3rd November, he returned home from a religious gathering (Waz Mahfil) with Muntaha and her younger brother.
Later that day, Muntaha went out to play with neighbouring children, as was her routine. However, by 3pm, when she had not returned, the family began searching for her.
With no trace found, they filed a general diary (GD) at Kanaighat Police Station.
Muntaha's family claims she was abducted in a premeditated act.
The general diary, initially filed on 3 November, details that she disappeared after returning home from the local Waz Mahfil with her father and was last seen playing near their house before going missing.
