The interim government is set to launch a clean-up programme for 64 canals and waterbodies across all 64 districts, Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan said.
The announcement was made during a canal-cleaning drive in Khilgaon, Dhaka, on Friday (1 November), marking National Youth Day.
Emphasising the government’s commitment to the programme, he stated, “This initiative will not be for show.”
Meanwhile, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan has informed that local committees will be formed to ensure the regular maintenance and preservation of each canal and river.
Following the announcement, hundreds of volunteers pledged their participation in the clean-up and commenced work at the Zirani Canal, symbolising the beginning of this national conservation effort.
