The interim government of Bangladesh, under the leadership of Dr Yunus, has renamed six public medical colleges across the nation, as announced in a recent notification.

The directive, signed by Dr Md Sarwar Bari, secretary of the Health Education and Family Welfare Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, outlines the name changes as follows:

  • Colonel Malek Medical College in Manikganj has been renamed to Manikganj Medical College.
  • Abdul Malek Ukil Medical College in Noakhali will now be known as Noakhali Medical College.
  • Sheikh Hasina Medical College in Jamalpur is renamed Jamalpur Medical College.
  • Sheikh Hasina Medical College in Tangail is now designated as Tangail Medical College.
  • Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College in Faridpur has been renamed Faridpur Medical College.
  • M Abdur Rahim Medical College in Dinajpur is now referred to as Dinajpur Medical College.

The order, issued on behalf of the president, has been made effective immediately.

Previously, following the government’s fall during a mass uprising on 5 August, students initiated these name changes.

This recent decision by the health division now formalises the new names of these institutions.
