Matia Chowdhury, the veteran politician and former minister widely known as "Agni Kanya", was laid to rest at the Intellectuals' Graveyard on Thursday (17 October), following her second funeral prayer at Gulshan's Azad Mosque after Zohr prayers.

Earlier in the morning, her body was brought to her residence at the Ramna Apartment Complex, where the first funeral prayer was held.

During this service, tributes were paid under the banner of the Awami League, followed by a floral wreath placed on behalf of the Dainik Sangbad.

Before 12:30pm, her body was taken to Gulshan's Azad Mosque. Due to most Awami League leaders being in hiding after the events of 5 August, no leaders from the party were present at the funeral.

However, a few leaders from the party's affiliated organisations, as well as workers from the Awami League and Communist Party, were seen attending the prayer.

Among those present at the funeral were former Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University AAMS Arefin Siddique, former President of Chhatra League Mainuddin Hassan Chowdhury, and President of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul.

Matia Chowdhury passed away on Wednesday afternoon after 12pm at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, where she had been under treatment. Despite being brought home during her treatment, her condition worsened, leading to her return to Evercare Hospital.

Born on 30 June 1942 in Pirojpur, Matia Chowdhury served as president of the Student Union before entering national politics with the National Awami Party (NAP).

She earned the title "Agni Kanya" (Daughter of Fire) for her fiery presence in the political arena.

In 1979, she joined the Awami League, serving in various capacities, including Agriculture Secretary, and was most recently a member of the party’s presidium.
