India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, on Tuesday (18 February), once again voiced strong support for reforming the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), highlighting India’s bid for a permanent seat.

Speaking candidly, the ambassador asserted that those opposing the expansion of the permanent category within the UNSC were merely "status quoists with a narrow focus."

In his remarks, Ambassador Harish emphasised that, in the current global context, where there is widespread concern regarding the UN’s effectiveness in addressing urgent international issues, reform has become a matter of necessity rather than choice, reports Wion News.

He stated, "Reforms are not a choice any more, but an imperative."

Continuing his critique, he condemned the "non-progressive" stance taken by certain parties, declaring that such an approach "can no longer be accepted" as the world faces complex, multifaceted challenges requiring more dynamic and inclusive representation within the UNSC.

This reiteration underscores India’s long-standing call for a more equitable and responsive Security Council, with a seat among the permanent members to better reflect the evolving geopolitical landscape.
