The United States Senate has confirmed former Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard as the director of National Intelligence (DNI), endorsing her appointment through a closely contested 52-48 vote on Wednesday (12 February).

Gabbard, who recently joined the Republican Party, will now oversee 18 intelligence agencies and serve as the principal intelligence adviser to the president.

According to a report by Reuters, Gabbard’s confirmation process was fraught with challenges, primarily due to concerns over her lack of experience in intelligence operations. Analysts speculated that this could cost her Republican support.

However, with the exception of one dissenting member, 52 Republican senators voted in her favour, securing her the role.

Political observers view Gabbard’s confirmation as a strategic victory for Donald Trump, whose administration has been keen on swiftly ensuring Senate approval for key appointments.

The move underscores the former president’s continued influence over the Republican establishment and its decision-making in Washington.
