Unprecedented rainfall and severe flooding have recently afflicted the desert nation of Saudi Arabia, compelling the National Centre for Meteorology (NCM) to issue a red alert for the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.
The situation, detailed in a report by Anadolu Agency on Thursday (9 January) has caused widespread damage across several cities.
The persistent heavy downpours over the past few days have led to extensive flooding, significantly impacting roadways and residential areas in multiple cities.
According to the Saudi Meteorological Department's forecast, this low-pressure system is expected to persist for several more days.
In addition to the red alerts for Mecca and Medina, orange alerts have been issued for the capital, Riyadh, and the central and south-western regions of Asir and Jazan provinces, where citizens have also been advised to remain vigilant.
Saudi Disaster Management Department, along with the international humanitarian aid organisation Red Crescent, has confirmed that all necessary preparations for rescuing those stranded by the floods have been completed.
Social media platforms are awash with images and videos of the flood, depicting vehicles swept away by the torrents.
The relentless rainfall and thunderstorm activity have resulted in rising water levels, presenting a rare and alarming spectacle in Saudi Arabia.
