Two murder cases have been filed against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 113 others in connection with the deaths of Miraj Hossain at Sanarpar in Demra and Mansur Mia, a machine operator at Buriganga Filling Station in Basila, Mohammadpur, during anti-discrimination student protests in Dhaka.
Khorshed Alam Mia filed a case against 92 individuals at the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Belal Hossain, accusing them of murdering Miraj Hossain on Tuesday (27 August).
The court directed the Demra Police to register the complaint as a First Information Report (FIR).
Among the notable accused are former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman, Additional Commissioner of DMP Harun-Or-Rashid, and Joint Commissioner of DMP Biplab Kumar Sarkar.
According to the case details, on 5 August, Miraj Hossain participated in an anti-discrimination student movement. When he reached the Sanarpar Main Road in Demra, members of the law enforcement agencies, along with hundreds of activists from the Awami League, various professional groups, and members of the Jubo League, Chhatra League, and Krishak League, armed with firearms, machetes, iron rods, and other weapons, attacked and opened fire on the protestors. Miraj and several others were shot during the incident. He was taken to Mitford Hospital, where the attending doctor declared him dead.
In a separate case, Mansur Mia's brother, Aynal Haque, filed a murder charge against 22 individuals at the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury. The court directed the Mohammadpur Police to register this complaint as an FIR.
Among the notable accused in this case are Awami League General Secretary and former minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former law minister Anisul Haque, former Local Government minister Tajul Islam, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Hasan Mahmud, Mohammad Ali Arafat, Salman F Rahman, Sadek Khan, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, Habibur Rahman, Harun-Or-Rashid, Biplab Kumar Sarkar, Harun-Or-Rashid, and Dr K Mahid Uddin.
In both cases, Sheikh Hasina has been named as the primary accused.
The case details regarding Mansur Mia’s death allege that on 19 July, during the quota reform movement, Mansur Mia was on his way to pick up his child from a madrasa in the Basila Bridge area of Mohammadpur when he was shot by police and RAB personnel.
He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctor declared him dead.
