A Dhaka court on Thursday (22 August) granted a four-day remand for journalist couple Shakil Ahmed, former Head of News at Ekattor Television, and Farzana Rupa, the channel's former principal correspondent, in connection with the murder of government employee Md Fazlul Karim.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ahmed Humayun Kabir issued the order after an appeal from the case’s Investigation Officer (IO) Sub-inspector Md. Mohaiminur Rahman of Uttara-East Police Station. The IO had initially requested a ten-day remand for each of the accused.

Omar Faruk Faruki, the plaintiff’s lawyer and former general secretary of the Dhaka Bar Association, stated that they had sought a ten-day remand for both suspects, but the court ultimately granted four days.

The journalist couple was arrested by immigration police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Wednesday while attempting to flee to France. They were subsequently handed over to the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
