The government is carefully observing the ongoing movements against the High Court decision restoring quota systems and the pension scheme, Pratyay, Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said Tuesday (9 July).

“The government’s stand on the quota issue is clear. In 2018, a circular was issued revoking the quota system as per the Prime Minister’s decision, which had been in place until the High Court demolished it following a case filed by seven children of freedom fighters. A petition has been filed in the Appellate Division against the HC decision, with a hearing on the petition expected soon,” said Quader.

Quader made these remarks during a party meeting at the Awami League central office on Bangabandhu Avenue, Dhaka.

At the time, Quader thanked the quota movement protesters for not holding any programmes today and appreciated the move to appoint lawyers against the HC decision.

The Awami League General Secretary also criticised the media for terming the movement as anti-quota. He said the movement the students are waging is for reforms to the quota system.
