The government will soon take the necessary legal steps to ban Jamaat, Awami League General Secretary and Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader said on Tuesday.
“The government will soon take the next steps to ban Jamaat after thoroughly examining the legal aspects. We aim to ensure that this malevolent force does not find any loophole to operate in independent Bangladesh,” he said to journalists on Tuesday (July 30) at the beginning of a joint meeting at the Awami League central office on 23 Bangabandhu Avenue, Dhaka.
Quader said the decision to ban the politics of Jamaat and Shibir was unanimously taken at the 14-party alliance meeting yesterday. “Many have been demanding this for a long time. This demand was also raised by the Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee led by Jahanara Imam and later by the Ganajagaran Mancha,” said Quader.
Quader said, “After the Second World War, Hitler's Nazi Party could not participate in politics in Germany due its part in war crimes. The International Crimes Tribunal has ruled Jamaat as a war criminal party.”
Regarding the day of mourning observed in memory of those killed during the quota reform protests, Quader said, “It is not a national day of mourning, the government is observing the day, not a national or state occasion.”
“At this time, we observe the month of mourning with due respect and solemnity in memory of those martyred on August 15. In the last working committee meeting, presided over by the Prime Minister, we decided on our programs for the National Mourning Day and the month of mourning. According to that decision, our city and affiliated organizations have determined their programs. Only two or three remain,” he added.
