More than 6 lakh people have been marooned in the Sylhet flood, landslides and continuous heavy rains, said sources in the Sylhet District Administration.
Many have left their homes and are moving to shelters. However, most people are unwilling to leave their homes and go to shelters. Meanwhile, all the rivers in Sylhet are flowing above the danger level.
As a result of continuous rains, besides the water of the Surma River, the drains are overflowing in different areas of the metropolis.
According to the Water Development Board (WDB), the water of the Surma River was flowing 122cm above the danger level at Kanighat Point till 6pm on Tuesday (18 June).
Flooding started in Sylhet on 27 May due to heavy rains and landslides from upstream - affecting at least 750,000 people in the district.
After 8 June, the flood situation became more normal. However, the situation deteriorated again in Sylhet due to continuous heavy rain on Sunday (16 June).
Most of the areas including the Shahjalal suburb of Sylhet city, Barikandi, Jatarpur, Mendibagh, Shivganj, Raynagar, Sobhanighat, Kalighat, Kamalgarh, Machimpur, Taltala, Jamtala, Kazirbazar, Madina Market, Akhalia and Majortila are under water.
Also, the regional roads of several upazilas including Goainghat and Companiganj of the district have been submerged in flood water and communication has been cut off.
The State Minister for Expatriate Welfare and Foreign Employment Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury MP is standing by the flood-hit people in urging humanity in the disaster situation.
He distributed dry food and cash in various shelters and homes of flood-hit people in Lamakaji and Dasghar Unions of Biswanath Upazila on 18 June.
According to the information of the district administration, till midnight on Tuesday (18 June), 6,75,937 people were trapped in water in 13 upazilas including Sylhet metropolis.
