A total of 227 candidates who are running in the third phase of the sixth upazila election are accused of various crimes, according to Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB).
“Among the candidates running for office in this phase, 307 people were accused in various cases in the past,” TIB’s report was made after analysing the affidavits of the candidates and presented during a press briefing at the Midas Centre on Monday (27 May).
“SAM Siddique, the chairman candidate of Kalihati upazila of Tangail district, is at the top of the list with 27 cases. The second is Pirojpur Sadar Upazila vice chairman candidate Md Sohag Sikder with 13 cases under his name. Third is Tofail Ahmed of Naikhongchari Upazila of Bandharban district with 11 cases against him,” TIB added.
Besides, 74 candidates have seen an increase in their income by 100% or more compared to 2019, the report found.
The report also stated BNP has expelled 51 of its local leaders for participating in the third phase of upazila elections.
Elections in 112 upazilas will be held in the third phase of the sixth upazila parishad election on 29 May.
A total of 1,419 candidates are participating in this phase.
Among them, 481 are chairman candidates, 561 are vice chairman candidates and 377 are women vice chairman candidates.
