A man was shot dead as police opened fire during a clash ensued between the supporters of the UP member candidates at a polling centre in Birol upazila of Dinajpur yesterday (28 April) night.

Mohammad Ali, 65, was shot at Singul Hamid-Hamida High School during the announcement of the results of the Azimpur Union Parishad elections.

Supporters of UP member candidates Saiful Islam and Jobaidur Rahman involved in clashes while counting votes. 

The policemen first fired blanks shots. After that, when the supporters threw brick chunks at them, the police fired 60 to 70 rounds of shotguns. At that time, a elderly man fell on the ground after being shot.

Later the locals rescued him and took him to Dinajpur M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead. Four policemen were also injured in the clash.

A three-member committee led by Additional District Magistrate Jane Alam has been formed to investigate the incident, said Deputy Commissioner of Dinajpur Shakil Ahmed.

The body has been asked to submit a report in three working days, the DC said, adding that border guard personnel have been deployed in the area to tackle any untoward situation.

“The situation is calm now," said Shakil Ahmed.
