The prices of kitchen market commodities in the capital Dhaka have been high despite a steady supply after the long Eid vacation.

Visiting the Karwan Bazar kitchen market on Friday (19 April), no vegetable was seen being sold under Tk50.

Potatoes are being sold at Tk 50 per kg, onion at Tk60-65 per kg, garlic at Tk200-220 per kg, ginger at Tk200 per kg, green chillies at Tk80-120 per kg, coriander leaves at Tk100 per kg and flour at Tk20 per kg. A hali (set of four) lemons is being sold for Tk30-40.

Eggplant is being sold at Tk60, beans Tk80, okra Tk60 per kg, tomato Tk50, cucumber Tk50 per kg.

Cabbage and Cauliflowers are being sold for Tk50 per piece.

Prices of fish and meat are the same as they were before Eid.

Sufia Begum came from Kalyanpur to do the weekly market in Kawran Bazar.

“I had Tk5,000 with me to buy food for a family of 5 people, almost half of the money has already been spent to buy fish. Vegetables and other household items are yet to be bought,” she said.

“Earlier, kitchen market shopping for the family’s weekly needs could be completed within Tk3,000,” she added.

Traders say the prices have increased to lesser supply than demand.
