Security measures are being reinforced across Dhaka and the rest of the country in preparation for the widespread celebrations of the Bengali New Year, Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday (8 April), he said all necessary steps were being taken to ensure that security remains uncompromised during the festivities.
“We are doing whatever is required to maintain law and order,” he affirmed, addressing concerns over potential disruptions.
When asked about his satisfaction with the state of law and order during the past eight months of the interim government, the adviser replied wryly, “I am as satisfied as you are.”
Commenting on recent incidents of vandalism at outlets of Bata and other foreign companies, he emphasised that ensuring security nationwide is his responsibility, and that action would be taken against those responsible for such acts.
“This year's celebrations are expected to draw large crowds,” he noted, adding that alongside Bengalis, 26 ethnic communities will also take part in various events and fairs throughout the country.
Meanwhile, Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki stated that the final decision on whether the traditional New Year procession will continue to be called "Mangal Shobhajatra" will be made by Dhaka University, which organises the event.
A decision is expected on 10 April.
“There was no discussion today regarding a name change,” Farooki added.
“As the organisers, the university will determine the naming of the procession.
