On 2 April 1917, US President Woodrow Wilson addressed Congress, requesting a declaration of war against Germany.

Citing unrestricted submarine warfare and the infamous Zimmermann Telegram as threats to American security, Wilson argued that US involvement was necessary to make the world "safe for democracy."

His appeal led to a formal declaration on 6 April, bringing the United States into World War I and shifting the balance in favour of the Allies.
