A Dhaka court has acquitted BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and seven others in a corruption case involving allegations of financial misconduct and irregularities in a gas exploration deal with Canadian company Niko.

The verdict was delivered on Wednesday (19 February) by Judge Rabiul Alam of Dhaka’s Special Judge’s Court-4.

The case accused the defendants of causing financial losses to the state through an allegedly non-transparent agreement with Niko.

Khaleda Zia is currently in London for medical treatment.

Her legal counsel, Mohammad Ziauddin Zia, represented her in court during the proceedings.
