Elon Musk has announced that his artificial intelligence startup, xAI, will launch its latest chatbot, Grok 3, on Monday (17 February), positioning it as the most advanced AI model in the world.
The unveiling will take place with a live demonstration at 8pm Pacific Time (0400 GMT), the tech billionaire revealed on Saturday via his social media platform, X.
Grok 3 has been trained using synthetic data and possesses the capability to analyse its own errors in pursuit of greater logical consistency, according to Musk.
"Will be honing product with the team all weekend, so offline until then," he added.
Last week, Musk stated that Grok 3 was in its final development phase and would be released globally within weeks.
With this launch, xAI is positioning itself as a serious contender in the artificial intelligence industry, which is currently dominated by OpenAI’s ChatGPT and an array of emerging rivals.
The AI landscape has seen increasing competition, particularly from China’s DeepSeek, which made waves last month by releasing a low-cost, high-quality chatbot.
DeepSeek rapidly surpassed ChatGPT in downloads on Apple’s App Store, challenging US dominance in AI innovation.
Despite his repeated warnings that AI could pose an existential threat to human civilisation, Musk has been aggressively expanding his footprint in the sector.
In December, xAI secured $6 billion in funding from investors including major US venture capitalists, chipmakers Nvidia and AMD, and sovereign funds from Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
An earlier funding round in May had also raised $6 billion, making xAI one of the world’s most valuable startups, though it remains significantly smaller than OpenAI.
Musk, who also heads Tesla and SpaceX, founded xAI in July 2023, just months after signing an open letter advocating a temporary halt to the development of powerful AI models.
Meanwhile, OpenAI’s board has rejected an offer led by Musk to acquire the company for $97.4 billion, its chairman confirmed on Friday.
