A pedestrian sustained a gunshot wound after being caught in the crossfire of a shootout between two rival teen gangs in Dhaka’s Hatirjheel area on Saturday (1 February) night.

"The incident occurred at approximately 9:30pm. The injured individual, identified as 55-year-old Jilani, was struck in the lower abdomen and has been admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for treatment," said to Mohammad Faruq, inspector of the DMCH police outpost.

Hatirjheel Police Station Sub-Inspector Selim stated that a clash between two groups of teen gang members broke out in the Ulon area, during which a passer-by was hit by a stray bullet.

Law enforcement is currently gathering further details, he added.

A senior officer from the Tejgaon division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), speaking on condition of anonymity, said that despite the exchange of gunfire, none of the gang members appeared to have been injured.

Victim Jilani’s daughter, Shefali Akhter, revealed that her father is a rickshaw puller and their residence is in Ulon.

He was standing in front of their home when the gunfire erupted, and suddenly, he was struck by a bullet in the lower abdomen.

Local residents rushed him to DMCH for treatment.

Police are investigating the incident and attempting to trace the individuals responsible for the shootout.
