Mumbai police have said that the suspect arrested in connection with the knife attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan is likely a Bangladeshi national.
"The suspect, whose belongings indicated his foreign origin, had adopted the name Vijay Das after illegally entering India," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 9) Dixit Gedam during a briefing on Sunday (19 January), reports Hindustan Times.
The accused, identified as 30-year-old Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, allegedly entered Khan's residence in the early hours of 16 January with the intent to commit robbery.
DCP Gedam stated, "Preliminary investigations suggest the accused is a Bangladeshi national who changed his name upon entering India illegally. He initially stayed in Mumbai for a few days before moving to nearby areas, working for a housekeeping agency."
"The accused, using aliases such as Vijay Das and Bijoy Das, was apprehended in Thane West. He lacked valid Indian identification documents, and the evidence seized supports his Bangladeshi origin," he added.
At approximately 2am on 16 January, Saif Ali Khan was attacked in his Bandra residence, resulting in multiple stab wounds.
The actor was promptly rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and was later declared out of danger.
His wife, Kareena Kapoor, and their two sons were present at the time of the incident but remained unharmed.
Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) immediately following the incident.
The suspect will be presented in court, where police will request custody to continue the investigation.
