A 30-year-old woman, Sanjida Akhtar, has died after contracting the human metapneumovirus (HMPV), marking the first fatality in Bangladesh attributed to this virus.
Sanjida passed away on Wednesday night (15 January), while receiving treatment at the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Mohakhali, Dhaka, said Dr Ariful Bashar, the hospital's superintendent.
This marks the nation's first death linked to HMPV. Sanjida's diagnosis of HMPV infection was reported on 12 January, with no prior history of international travel recorded for the patient.
