President Mohammed Shahabuddin has called for more Japanese investment in Bangladesh’s tourism, information and communication technology (ICT), medical, and other emerging sectors.

He made the call as new ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh Shinichi SAIDA presented his credentials to the president this afternoon.

Describing Japan as Bangladesh’s largest bilateral development partner, President Shahabuddin said, “Our relationship has recently been elevated to the level of a strategic partnership.” He expressed appreciation for Japan’s continued assistance in Bangladesh’s socio-economic development and hoped that the bilateral ties between the two nations would reach new heights in the future.

Highlighting Japan’s contributions under the BIG-B initiative, he noted that Japanese support has played a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s development. To date, the country has received over $23 billion in grants and loans from Japan, the president added.

Speaking on bilateral trade, which currently amounts to $4 billion annually, the president praised Japan as one of Bangladesh’s top five export destinations. He also noted that over 350 Japanese companies are currently operating in Bangladesh, contributing significantly to the economy.

Regarding the ongoing negotiations of the bilateral Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), President Shahabuddin emphasised the importance of an early conclusion of the agreement to reduce trade barriers and facilitate further Japanese investment.

The president also commended Japan’s humanitarian support for the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals (Rohingyas) in Bangladesh. He urged Japan to continue its efforts toward a sustainable solution for the safe and dignified return of Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar’s Rakhine state.

President Shahabuddin expressed his desire to invite His Majesty the Emperor, the Empress, and members of the Imperial Family of Japan to visit Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time. He assured the ambassador of his full support and pledged all necessary assistance for the envoy’s duties in Bangladesh.

In response, Ambassador SAIDA highlighted the Japanese government’s commitment to expanding investment in Bangladesh, noting significant opportunities in various sectors.

Earlier in the day, the ambassador was honoured with a ceremonial ‘guard of honour’ by the horse-mounted contingent of the President Guard Regiment (PGR).

The ceremony was attended by Foreign Secretary Md Jasim Uddin, President's Military Secretary Major General Mohammad Adil Chowdhury, and Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam, among others.
