BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has underscored the possibility of fascism re-emerging in Bangladesh, stressing the need for collective unity to safeguard the nation from such threats.
His remarks came during a discussion titled "The Role of Writers and Artists in Reconstructing the Nation," organised by the Jatiya Kabita Parishad at the National Press Club on Thursday (28 November).
Mirza Fakhrul, speaking as the chief guest, noted, “Yes, fascism has fallen. However, due to certain actions, there remains a significant possibility of its return at any time.” He urged individuals to rise above disunity and march forward with concerted efforts, warning that the sacrifices made over the years must not go in vain.
Critiquing the prevailing political instability, Fakhrul asserted, “This chaotic environment has been deliberately engineered, and the remnants of fascism are behind it. Those of us who fought against it must question why divisions are surfacing among us. Listening to conversations in various quarters, I fear we are inadvertently steering the movement in a different direction.”
Commenting on the necessity of a democratic process, he stated, “Many say elections alone do not constitute democracy, and I agree. However, a process is imperative. Without it, we cannot achieve our goals.”
Fakhrul also criticised the Indian media, citing recent provocations regarding ISKCON. “Just last night, I received calls from several individuals asking about our stance on ISKCON. This is clearly a question with ulterior motives,” he remarked.
The discussion was presided over by Mohan Rayhan, Convener of the Jatiya Kabita Parishad.
Other speakers included former DUCSU VP Mujahidul Islam Selim, President of Nagorik Oikya Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Saiful Haque, General Secretary of the Revolutionary Workers Party, Zonayed Saki, Chief Coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolan, BNP Vice Chairman Nurul Islam Moni, writers and intellectuals Salimullah Khan and Abu Sayeed Khan, Hasan Hafiz, President of the National Press Club and Editor of Kaler Kantho, poet and journalist Sohrab Hasan, and Rashed Khan, General Secretary of Gonodhikar Parishad.
The forum highlighted the pivotal role of writers and artists in shaping a democratic and just society, reinforcing the need for unity in the face of challenges.
