The Jatiyo Party (JP) has postponed its planned rally scheduled for tomorrow in front of its central office in Kakrail, following a ban imposed by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on all gatherings in the area. The decision was announced in a statement issued tonight (1 October) by JP Press Secretary Khandaker Delwar Jalal, which noted that the party would announce its next programmes at a later date.
In its statement, the Jatiyo Party acknowledged the DMP's authority in maintaining public order and cited the ban as the reason for rescheduling the rally.
The DMP had earlier issued a public notice prohibiting any form of meeting, assembly, procession, or demonstration near JP office on Pioneer Road in Kakrail, invoking Section 29 of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance. The restriction was implemented in light of rising tensions between opposing groups in the area, aiming to prevent potential disturbances and ensure public safety.
The DMP’s decision came a day after a group associated with “Anti-Fascist Students, Workers, and Masses” reportedly set fire to and vandalized the JP headquarters. Following the incident, JP Chairman GM Quader condemned the attack, expressing his resolve to continue protesting against what he described as injustices and discrimination in the country. Despite risks to his safety, Quader emphasized his commitment to holding accountable those responsible and advocating for justice.
As the JP awaits a more secure time to reschedule its rally, the party’s leadership has reiterated its intention to proceed with caution while advocating for its principles.
