United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk, currently on an official visit to Bangladesh, assured that the UN's human rights office would extend full support to Bangladesh in the context of its evolving situation.

On Wednesday (30 October), Turk addressed journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following a meeting with Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain.

The UN High Commissioner’s visit has seen extensive discussions regarding the current human rights challenges in Bangladesh, according to Turk’s statement following the hour-long meeting.

Additionally, Turk disclosed plans to meet with the chief of army staff, the trade adviser, and the chief adviser later in the day, aiming to further these dialogues on human rights matters.

Earlier, on Monday night (28 October) Turk arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, where he was received by the director-general and spokesperson of the UN Division of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Toufiq Hassan.

Following his arrival in Dhaka, Turk held meetings with seven advisors to discuss the potential establishment of a UN human rights office in the city.

The visit follows the 2022 visit of Michelle Bachelet, Turk’s predecessor, who served as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and also addressed similar concerns in Bangladesh.
