Any decision concerning the removal or resignation of President Mohammed Sahabuddin will be finalised based on consensus among political parties, said Environment, Forest and Climate Affairs Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan.

“This is a significant matter; there is no room for clandestine decision-making, nor should it be left in abeyance indefinitely,” Rizwana Hasan remarked during a briefing with journalists at the secretariat on Sunday (27 October).

Addressing demands for a political party ban, she commented that while public sentiment may call for it, there has been no discussion within the advisory council on banning any political parties.

On the topic of the president’s role, the adviser clarified that discussions have indeed taken place within the advisory council, although no final decision has been reached.

She stated, “The current president symbolises the fascist government that preceded this administration, which does not align with the post-revolutionary government’s ideals. Political parties contend that the removal of the President could spark a political crisis, while our government’s stance is to establish a political consensus on the matter. As soon as this consensus is achieved, a decision will follow. Nothing will occur behind closed doors.”

Addressing criticisms regarding the advisory council’s oath-taking before the current president, Rizwana Hasan noted, “Many raise this issue from a place of emotion, but the oath was taken in alignment with the realities of the situation.”

Hasan further commented on the Bangladesh Nationalist Party's (BNP) stance, describing it as inconsistent. “The protesters are engaging in dialogue with political parties on this issue. Our government is working towards forming a political consensus first, followed by a decision. There will be neither undue delay nor hasty action.”
