The police have detained retired Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP) and former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner, Khandaker Golam Faruq.
The arrest took place at approximately 3am on Saturday (27 October), at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Reports indicate that Faruq, who was leaving Dhaka for a personal trip to Bangkok, was intercepted at the airport and subsequently taken into custody. Originally hailing from Ghatandi village in Bhuapur, Tangail, he is the son of the late Khandaker Haydar Ali.
On 28 July, a formal complaint was lodged with the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), alleging that Faruq accumulated Tk 3,000 crore through corrupt practices during his tenure.
According to the complaint, he exploited his official power to amass this wealth, even reportedly obtaining funds from remote areas across the country.
Faruq, a Bangladeshi citizen who also holds a US Green Card, is alleged to have transferred approximately Tk2,500 crore to the United States through his in-laws, who are American citizens.
The former police commissioner also purportedly owns assets valued at nearly Tk500 crore across Bangladesh, including both movable and immovable properties.
These assets, along with substantial cash reserves, are reportedly held in the names of close relatives and spread across multiple bank accounts.
