Interim government has submitted an appeal seeking a suspension of the High Court's verdict declaring "Joy Bangla" as the national slogan of Bangladesh.
"Supreme Court's Appellate Division will hear the matter on 8 December," said Additional Attorney General Barrister Aneek R Haque on Monday (2 December).
In its 10 March 2020 verdict, the High Court directed the government to take the necessary steps to establish "Joy Bangla" as the national slogan of the country.
Acting on this directive, the government issued a gazette notification on 2 March 2022, formalising the slogan's status.
The High Court's decision came after a writ petition was filed in 2017 by Supreme Court lawyer Dr Bashir Ahmed, seeking the declaration of "Joy Bangla" as the nation's slogan.
Following hearings on the petition, the court delivered its ruling in favour of the proposal.
The issue has since been a subject of legal and public discourse, with the government now seeking further adjudication at the appellate level.
