Amid export ban on onion, India on Thursday (22 February) took an exception and permitted overseas sale of a fixed quantity of 54,760 tonne of the kitchen staple to Bangladesh, Mauritius, Bahrain and Bhutan.
“We have allowed export of 50,000 tonne of onion to Bangladesh, 1,200 tonne to Mauritius, 3,000 tonne of Bahrain and 560 tonne to Bhutan with immediate effect,” Indian Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh told news agency PTI.
Rohit Kumar Singh said the decision was taken following a recommendation from the Indian External Affairs Ministry.
The shipments will be undertaken by private traders until 31 March
Currently, India has an export ban on onion till 31 March.
The ban was imposed on 8 December last year in order to boost domestic supply and keep prices under control.
